Volunteer Events For Retirees Be a MathCounts Volunteer by Mel WeinzimerLooking to spend some time volunteering in our schools? Consider becoming an advisor or coach at your local middle school math club. MATHCOUNTS® is a national math enrichment, coaching & competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement in every U.S. state & territory. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, MATHCOUNTS is one of the most successful education partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors & students. Schools select students to compete individually or as part of a team in one of the more than 500 written & oral competitions held nationwide. Top students advance to the state, & ultimately, national level. Raytheon is committed to raising awareness around the nation’s decline of math and science skills. Raytheon supports MathCounts through its MathMovesU initiative by providing rich content tied to Walsh Middle School Math Club supported by Raytheon volunteers. Contests, prizes and events inspire students to pursue educational tracks that will ideally lead to careers in science and engineering. MathMovesU program grants $1 million annually to teachers, students and schools. Raytheon also encourages both active employees and retirees to volunteer in their local schools. If you have the interest and want a rewarding experience contact your state MathCounts coordinator who will connect you with a local math club advisor.
