The Over-50 Crowd Loves the OLLI at UMass Boston and You Will, Too! What has been changing the lives of our area’s older adults for the past eleven years? The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UMass Boston, the only lifelong learning program in Boston at a public university has been pivotal in transforming the way those over 50 spend their retirement and pre-retirement time. Both those who loved school and those who hated it find that learning when you’re over 50 is a delight. No prior college experience is required, and there are no tests and no term papers. OLLI offers a vast array of subjects: art, history, politics, literature, film, language, and computers among others. Some of the upcoming courses for fall are Before the Microwave: Eating and Drinking in Boston, 1620-1900; The History and Culture of Thailand; Introduction to Opera; Working in Watercolor; Tennessee Williams: The Man and His Masterpieces; Spirituality and Aging, and Getting to Know Your Digital Camera among others. OLLI also offers its members a thought provoking series of brown-bag lunch presentations during weekdays featuring How To Mine a Life Story; Immigration: The Hope and the Dilemma; Fall Gardening; Sculpture’s Progression in the 19th and 20th Centuries, and many more. OLLI members can sign up for field trips to area art museums and historic-house sites, as well as the theatre. There are overnight trips to New York, local social events, and fascinating opportunities for overseas travel. Membership in the OLLI is just $175 a year, far less than at many other, similar programs. Membership includes up to three classes per semester and unlimited brown-bag lunch presentations. A $50 associate membership allows for attendance at brown-bag lunch presentations and gives the member an opportunity to look into field trips and foreign travel. A limited number of scholarships are available. Most classes and activities are held at the UMass campus in Boston, but others are available at the Hingham Public Library or at Cordage Park in Plymouth. OLLI is registering now for courses beginning in September 2010. To view the complete course catalogue, please go to: www.olli.umb.edu. Or, call 617-287-7312 to have a catalogue mailed. Please come and join us, and bring a friend. Or, come and join us and make new friends!

MEL/MRL Reunion (Added6/16/09) Hello Everyone, I've received several inquiries about when the next MEL/MRL reunion is going to take place. I'm glad to hear that some are making room on their calendar so they can attend. So, this is an early notice. The reunion will take place on Thursday, September 17th from 5pm to 9pm at the Knickerbocker Club in Lowell. I've already reserved the hall so please mark it in your calendar.
I'll be sending a few notices out as the time nears. Until then have a great summer and be healthy so we can see you in September. Thanks Cos Cavicchio Safeguard Missile Defense System Reunion ( Added 6/6/09) Bell Labs was the prime contractor for the Safeguard Missile Defense System that was deployed during the cold war in ND.
